IPRIA Seminar Series

Why Do Firms Patent?

A free public seminar in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane proudly presented by IPRIA in association with the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia (IPTA)

Dr de Rassenfosse will present data on the relative importance of various patenting motives such as desire for freedom-to-operate; to license; to secure financial support; and to directly protect against imitation. Survey data from the US and Europe indicates that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are most likely to patent to licensing and to win over banks. SMEs tend to use their patents more actively than large firms as they license a higher proportion of their portfolio. There are clear differences across jurisdictions: licensing rates are significantly higher in the US and the market for technology appears more fragmented in Europe.
