Visiting Melbourne

Summer in Melbourne holds much appeal for everyone with an array of activities and natural settings to enjoy. With an average January temperature of 26°C (79°F), Melbourne provides a welcome escape from the colder climes of the northern hemisphere. Flanked by the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas each with their own unique charm, the city of Melbourne is located where the Yarra River meets Port Phillip Bay on the south-eastern tip of Australia. A vibrant city with a thriving arts scene, there is much for the visitor to explore from boutique shops, museums and galleries to the striking modern architecture of the arts and entertainment precinct, Federation Square. The city also boasts a broad selection of eateries to suit every palate, from modern fine dining establishments to unique laneway cafes and bars.

January sees the city of Melbourne host the Australian Open tennis championships, a world class event with a range of related summer festivities and free concerts. Most of the city’s attractions are easily accessible on foot but also by use of the comprehensive public transport service. Beyond the city centre, sparkling bay beaches, spectacular surf coasts, natural rain forests, rugged mountains and numerous award winning wine regions offer further delights, only a short drive from the city. The diverse beauty of the Victorian landscape offers an equally varied range of activities and experiences. Whether diving, abseiling, bushwalking, swimming or the more gentle pursuits of a leisurely glass of the region’s finest wines, there is something to occupy everyone.
